Police chiefs in the United Kingdom have ordered their teams to hunt and jail hugely successful pedophile hunters, who get the child predators arrested and protect the vulnerable children.

Officers have been told to not co-operate with the vigilante groups that hunt pedophiles; instead, they are told to send them behind bars. Mirror reports:

The guidance tells officers not only not to work with groups who are trying to catch potential child predators – but to pursue them with the full force of the law. Officers have been told to investigate potential harassment, privacy and violent offenses committed by the vigilante groups, as well as those they accuse of child grooming.

According to the Times report, the guidelines, issued in 2017, warns officers that vigilante groups have no consideration for ‘safeguarding requirements of victims of pedophiles they have ousted’ and that ‘pedophile hunters don’t safeguard the privacy of the victims’.

More than 70 vigilante groups exist in the United Kingdom; The Hunted One, Plymouth Against Pedophiles, and Dark Justice are just a few that search the Internet for potential child abusers.

The latest directive follows reports of pedophiles, caught by the vigilantes, killing themselves or going into trauma surfaced. The Daily Mail reports:

David Baker, 43, killed himself in October four days after being confronted by pedophile hunters. He was detained by Hampshire police. His family said the vigilantes failed to consider the repercussions of their actions.

“Members of a group called The Hunted One surrounded a man they claimed was grooming a teenage girl on Easter Day at Bluewater shopping center near Dartford, sparking a violent scuffle. The abuse suspect was later jailed for a child sex offense and two of the vigilantes admitted affray.

The police claim vigilante groups do not have strict protocols whereas police officers are asked to follow guidelines when conducting such operations.

Officers are told that they must not work with the groups or endorse their activities in any way and they should make clear that confrontation and exposing abusers online “could put people at risk” and warns the wrong people could be exposed,” reports DevonLive.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for child protection, says people who reveal the pedophiles give these criminals a chance to erase the evidence before the official authorities can get to them:

So-called pedophile hunters are taking risks they don’t understand and can undermine police investigations. It can jeopardize ongoing police investigations and these people have no way of safeguarding child victims. It also leads to people who have been identified going missing or raising concerns for their safety.
